Scientists: The world is still not ready for babies made of gene

HONG KONG – A group of leading scientists said it is still too early to try to make permanent changes in the DNA that can be inherited by future generations, according to a Chinese researcher.

Scientists gathered in Hong Kong this week to attend an international conference on genetic regulation, the ability to rewrite the life code to try to correct or prevent disease.

Although science promises to help people who are already born, scientists said on Thursday that it is irresponsible to try on eggs, sperm or embryos because its risks and safety are still unknown.

The conference was excited by the Chinese researcher's claim that she helped make the first baby in the world that was arranged in the gene, two girls that he said were born earlier this month.
