Recent French medical studies show that soft drinks, sports drinks and even 100% fruit juice can increase the risk of some types of cancer.
Although the study failed to prove why, it was found that taking 3 to 4 ounces of sweet drinks per day was associated with an increase of 18% in the overall cancer risk.
A French research team at the University of Paris found that the level of similar consumption is associated with a risk of 22% of breast cancer.
The researchers, led by dr. Matilde Suffer, director of epidemiological research at the University, collected data on more than 100,000 men and women of an average age of 42 years. And various drinks that are consumed daily and monitored for up to nine years, from 2009 to 2018.
The study revealed the link between consumption of sweet drinks and the risk of cancer in general, and in particular breast cancer. The researchers did not find any link between sweet drinks and prostate or colon cancer.
Commenting on the results, a spokeswoman for the American Cancer Association said the results should give consumers a break because obesity is a known risk factor for cancer. Sugared drinks, after extensive research, are associated with sugars and obesity.
